With the increasing number of states that are legalizing the use of marijuana in addition to the 2018 Farm Bill regarding industrial hemp growers, both oils (including hemp oil) are now associated with countless health benefits.
There are definite differences between marijuana and industrial hemp, however, and it is important to know what they are first.
Marijuana vs. Industrial Hemp – Same Plant, Different Strains
Both of these strains initiate from the same family of Cannabis Sativa plants. The marijuana strain contains high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the property that creates the “high.” It also has lower levels of CBD than industrial hemp. Marijuana is still illegal federally and in many states, it is only legal for medical purposes with tight restrictions on its use.
Industrial hemp, on the other hand, is legal everywhere because of its low to zero THC properties (Lively Owl products are all completely THC-free) and high levels of cannabidiol or CBD. The only restrictions were in growing the plant, and those restrictions are easing, especially with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill legalizing the production of hemp.
The Differences in Oils – CBD and Hemp Seed
The oils that are legal on the market today come from the industrial hemp plant, not the marijuana plant. You can find CBD infused in just about anything from edibles to liquids. But, what is the difference between the CBD and hemp oils?
The main difference is from which part of the plant the oil originated. Hemp seed oil, as the name indicates, comes from the seeds of the hemp plant while CBD oil originates from the parts of the plant that are rich in cannabinoids or CBD. They simply do not contain the same properties.
HEMP Seed Oil
To produce this oil, the seeds alone are cold-pressed to extract the oil. The oil is high in protein and calories and contains healthy nutrients like Vitamin E and Omega-3. The oil has little, if any, THC and the CBD or cannabidiol is rather diluted compared to CBD infused oil.
Hemp oil can be a healthy addition to nutrition because of its rich antioxidant properties and many beauty products claim it has anti-aging benefits as well.
This oil is rich in cannabidiol and while it is also extracted from hemp, the whole plant is used, not just the seeds, and contains the high medicinal properties that hemp seed oil does not.
You may have heard of this oil treating a variety of serious health issues like seizure disorders, reducing anxiety and aiding in the treatment of cancer, with getting you high. Other health benefits that cannabidiol aids in is treating pain, muscle spasms and a variety of sleep disorders.
Because of its high cannabidiol and robust antioxidant properties, it may also help to control blood sugar levels and boost bone health, which is important for people who have early signs of diabetes or osteoporosis.
More importantly, CBD oil is not psychoactive so it can treat a variety of health issues without the high you may experience with medical marijuana.
